Oh, Superstitions!

Hello there!

So the guestlist still isn't complete but we're getting there. We're trying to keep the headcount to around 200 and so far we have no single clue as to how to do that. Haha!

I was home in with my parents last week and we were throwing ideas around. My mom, growing up in the province, had a lot of words of wisdom to share. So far, I've had about twenty-something ideas shot down because malas (bad luck) daw. *sigh*

As we Filipinos know, superstitions are said to have emerged from folklore even before Spain invaded the Philippines. Some have been borrowed and/or mixed with other cultures that Filipinos have interacted with.

The time of "you should do this" and "you should do that" has arrived, folks!

For those of you planning your own wedding, you may want to take note of these...

An engaged couple cannot...

>Have a divorced/separated/widow/widower/annulled man or woman  as their Ninong or Ninang (Principal Sponsors)

>Have a married/divorced/separated/widow/widower/annulled man or woman  as their bridesmaid, groomsman, best man, or maid of honor

>Get married on a Friday

>Travel to distant places because engaged couples are prone to accidents

>Wear pearls on their wedding day

An engaged couple has to...

>Pick their brother/sister  to be their Best Man/Maid of Honor (no one else)

>"Pay" their single older brothers and sister because the couple is getting married before the older siblings do.

And here are more!

>The bride should never try her wedding gown on
>The couple should be wed during a full moon
>Siblings cannot marry in the same year

So far these are the superstitions and customs that we have been advised to observe.

I'm sure there are going to be a lot more so Hon and I are bracing ourselves.

What about you? Have you any to share?
